"CABARET" - NVC's 10th YEAR ANNIVERSARY MUSICAL
The New Voice Company's grand finale for its 2004 season is one of the most acclaimed and beloved musicals of all time - "CABARET", with songs by John Kander and Fred Ebb, and book by Joe Masteroff.
"CABARET" is an "astonishing artistic expression of life at the brink of the millennium as seen through the prism of history" - a show that gives voice to a "singing and dancing commemoration of promiscuity, prostitution, sexuality, oppression and the rise of Nazism".
Enter a world on the verge of chaos, a dark and powerfully decadent universe, where life is celebrated amid flashes of irredeemable destruction.
CABARET explores Berlin's seedy underworld, where audiences are transported to a decadent sub-culture, a raunchy night scene, where sexual depravity and moral despair reign. We meet a colorful cast of Berlin misfits and expatriates - Sally Bowles - the British star of the Kit Kat club, Clifford Bradshaw - a struggling American writer, the Master of Ceremonies -the androgynous and malevolent commentator, Fraulein Schneider -the boarding house land lady in love with Herr Schulz - a Jewish man living in Nazi Berlin, Herr Ludwig - a member of the Nazi Party masquerading as a friend, and Fraulein Kost - a prostitute and dancer at the third rate sleazy Kit Kat Club - who all fail to see the impact the Nazi's will soon have on the country. CABARET closely links all their stories as friends, and portrays the hopes and fears of a soon-to-disappear world.
Through subtle outbursts of violence and rising overtones of the rise of Hitler, the frightening, new reality begins to invade the everyday existence of the CABARET characters, whose lives and loves are brilliantly interwoven with many of the show's classic songs. They include Maybe This Time, Cabaret, Money, If You Could See Her, Mein Heirr and Wilkommen, among others. It is this juxtaposition - of the character's vulnerability, warmth and caring alongside the marching forces of evil - that lends CABARET its timelessness and its humanity.
The NVC production is based on the brand new Broadway version of Sam Mendes, which promises to be not only darker, but also altogether raw, sensual, entertaining, terrifying, sensational, disturbing, and absolutely mesmerizing! Critics have hailed this modern revival version as "a production that keeps you spellbound….a stunning revival", one that "generates the excitement of something brand new".
The show's ending is a dazzling and powerful reminder about one of history's darkest hours: Victim, participant or witness - no one is exempt from the experience.
"Leave all your troubles outside!
So - life is disappointing? Forget it!
We have no troubles here! Here life is beautiful……"
