THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES RETURNS TO TOKYO
The New Voice Company (NVC), one of Asia's leading theatre companies known for its thought provoking and socially relevant productions, returns to Tokyo with their international hit production of THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES by Eve Ensler.
THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES is precisely what its name suggests - a series of stories, based on interviews, in which women talk about the most secret part of their bodies. But it's a great deal more. Eve Ensler shows so triumphantly that by opening up such a subject, you can also reveal a whole range of human experience. Using intelligence, integrity and comparison, Ensler has created not just one of the best shows in the world today (it has premiered in over 50 countries and been translated in over 35 languages), but also the most morally serious.
THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES is alternately hilarious and moving. Covering issues from sexual abuse, marriage, sex, orgasms, childbirth, infidelity and womanhood, the play deftly combines drama and comedy. The play's language is frank and open, and the stories it tells are vivid and direct. Both remain rooted in real characters ad recognizable experiences.
In THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES, Eve Ensler has given voice to a chorus of lusty, outrageous, poignant, brave, highly original and thoroughly human stories. The play brazenly explores the humor, power, pain ,wisdom, outrage, mystery and excitement hidden in vaginas. Having seen THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES, no one - woman or man - will ever look at the world the same way again.
THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES has been called "a bonafide phenomenon" (New York Times), "alternately funny, poetic and provocative" (Entertainment Weekly), "marvelous, one of the best shows in town" (Daily News) and "a work of art and a piece of cultural history" (Variety).
The Japanese version of the play, translated by award-winning and critically acclaimed writer Keiko Itoh, stars two of the original Japanese cast members - MIZUKA and CHIZURU ONOYAMA - two of the country's most accomplished, versatile and talented theatre actresses. Both actresses received critical acclaim for their powerful performances in THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES in Japanese when they premiered the show at Theater V, Akasaka in June 2004. Joining them is TSUZUMI YAMAMOTO.
The English version of the play, which is premiering for the first time in Tokyo, stars international actress MONIQUE WILSON, Philippine premiere Jazz star and recording and concert artist LYNN SHERMAN, and the Philippine's rising theatre star - JENNY JAMORA. - all of whom have performed THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES for over four years, in the Philippines, Hong Kong and Singapore. Both the English and Japanese productions of THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES are directed by Monique Wilson.
Monique Wilson played the lead role of Kim in the original West End production of "Miss Saigon" and has appeared in over 200 professional theatre productions. She is also one of the Philippine's biggest theatre, film, television and recording stars - and has received numerous awards for her achievements. Monique is also the Founder and Artistic Director of the New Voice Company and is not only one of the Philippine's most accomplished actresses, but also one of its most critically acclaimed directors. She recently starred in and directed the Broadway musical CABARET in the Philippines - where she received rave reviews in the lead role of Sally Bowles, and as the show's Director.
